The highlight of today’s journey is ascending the Sigiriya Rock, which houses the spectacular castle that attracts the majority of tourists to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The iconic giant lion paws protect the steps leading to the peak, which previously housed the monarch’s palace. A little way up the mountain is the well-known Sigiriya Frescoes, or rock paintings, which are said to be among the world’s oldest.
